New Maserati Ghibli Unveiled

The Maserati Ghibli, a new BMW 5-series rival, has been revealed.

The Maserati Ghibli has been unveiled ahead of its public debut at the 2013 Shanghai motor show on April 20.

The Ghibli is a new four-door saloon closely related to the new Quattroporte luxury car. It will be a rival for top-spec versions of executive saloons such as the BMW 5-series and Jaguar XF. Prices are expected to start at around £50,000.

Full technical details are yet to be released, but Maserati has confirmed that the Ghibli sits on a shortened version of the platform used for the Quattroporte.

A choice of two turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 petrol engines will be available, and an eight-speed automatic gearbox will be standard. Buyers will have the choice of rear-wheel drive or "Q4" four-wheel drive.

The Ghibli will also be available with a 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine, making it the first diesel-powered Maserati production car in history.

Maserati says the Ghibli will have a "sportier character" than the Quattroporte, and that the new model will play a significant role in its plan to increase sales to 50,000 cars per year.

Full details are expected to be released closer to the Ghibli's debut at the Shanghai motor show.
