The BMW X4 - which blends elements of coupe and SUV - will go on sale in 2014.
The BMW Concept X4 has been unveiled ahead of its public debut at the 2013 Shanghai motor show later this month. BMW describes it as a Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) and has confirmed that a production version - called X4 - will go on sale in 2014.
Like the larger X6, the X4's styling blends elements of coupe and SUV. The front of the car has a chunky bumper with SUV-style cladding, and the front grille and headlights are similar to those of the 4-Series coupe, which goes on sale this autumn.
Viewed in profile, the X4 has a similar overall shape to the X6, while the rear tailgate and lights echo those of both the X6 and the recently launched 3-Series Gran Turismo.
Underneath, the X4 shares much of its underpinnings with the X3 SUV; it will be built alongside that car (and also the X5 and X6) at BMW's factory in Spartanburg, USA.
No interior pictures have been released, but the X4's cabin is expected to share its overall architecture, and most switchgear, with the X3.
BMW is yet to release any technical details, but the X4's engine line-up is likely to be very similar to the X3's, with a choice of four- or six-cylinder diesel engines. Both rear- and four-wheel-drive models could be offered.
Prices are yet to be confirmed, but an entry-level price of at least £33,000 is likely.
