10 of the best beaches near airports

Grab some sun during a layover

Talk about close to the airport: Dockweiler Beach lies directly under the LAX flight path.

Sleep pods, beauty spas and gourmet restaurants are all well and good for passing time during a layover, but some major airports go one better.

They've got a beach.

Well, almost. They've got a beach that's just a short hop from the terminal, allowing adventurous travelers to soak up some sunshine and surf while waiting for their next flight.

Here are the best sands within striking distance of some of the world's biggest business hubs.

Tough shell to crack

Tough shell to crack: Turtle fends off Gator’s attack

Wildlife photographer Patrick Castleberry captured images of a titanic tussle between an eastern river cooter turtle and a 6-foot alligator in Georgia’s Okefenokee Swamp. Surprise, surprise – the turtle won (in that it didn’t end up in the gator’s belly). After 15 minutes of trying to crack the turtle’s shell in its jaw, the gator finally gave up and went on its way in search of something a bit softer on the outside. Castleberry spoke with the U.K.’s Daily Mail about the confrontation. “It was definitely turtle one, alligator nil,” he said.

And we’re off. An alligator’s jaw is capable of thousands of pounds of pressure, but the turtle’s shell is up to the challenge. (Patrick Castleberry/ Caters)

UK police have reported a 540% increase in Facebook crimes over the past three years, according to the Criminal Justice Degrees Guide. Crimes have taken a different form on Facebook, requiring the creation of new laws or reinterpretation of existing laws.

Anti-Anorexia Ad Campaign

Powerful anti-anorexia ad campaign tells women 'you are not a sketch' using models with fashion illustration proportions

Star Models, a modeling agency based in Brazil, has released a graphic new anti-anorexia ad campaign, using Photoshop to turn models into life-size fashion illustrations.

The ads, which run with the tag line 'Say no to anorexia,' show a fashion illustration with typically exaggerated proportions next to a model wearing the same outfit - and the same measurements.

While the models have been airbrushed to mimic the unrealistic illustrations, the ad pleads to young women: 'You are not a sketch.'

Faces Of Addiction

Photographer Chris Arnade has been following the stories of addicts in Hunts Point neighborhood, the poorest in all of New York City, for several years. Of this compelling documentary project, he says,

"What I am hoping to do, by allowing my subjects to share their dreams and burdens with the viewer and by photographing them with respect, is to show that everyone, regardless of their station in life, is as valid as anyone else."

Vanessa, thirty-five, had three children with an abusive husband. She "lost her mind, started doing heroin," after losing the children, who were taken away and given to her mother.
